Good industry trade shows are a staple of all the industries that are vital to our nations commerce and, in the case of parcels, world-wide commerce. And boy, have we just completed a great one (even if I do say so myself)! This years Parcel Shipping & Distribution Forum, held in Chicago, September 11-13, was our best ever. If I had to use a one-word description, I would say energetic. The over 475 participants and 49 vendors were fired up.

The exchanges during sessions, lunches, dinners and receptions were lively, many focusing on packaging (UPS had just announced its new dim-weigh charges), delivery performance (DHLs working out of its new hub problems), unanticipated delivery costs (fuel and the USPS 2007 rate case) and the effect of the World Wide Web on parcel volumes and the added competition (this was a biggie). There seems to be no shortage of issues that parcel processors have to deal with.

Sessions focused on the complete parcel handling process, from order entry through warehousing, packing, docking, shipping, delivery and returns and, judging from the session evaluations, they were real values. Virtually every session rated out on the high side (which makes us feel pretty great about our presenter selection process).

Our staff puts a lot of work into the planning and preparation of this forum, and we want to send a giant thank you to all those who helped make this years forum a success. Thanks to EventEvolution for the planning and management of the show. Thanks to our corporate sponsors: DHL, Pitney Bowes and the United States Postal Service. Thanks to our lunch/event sponsors: Morgan Stanley, Endicia and DHL. Thanks to our vendor sponsors all 49 of them. Thanks to the session presenters and speakers you did great! And a very special thanks to all of you attendees its you that make it a success. We will endeavor to make next years show held from October 29-31, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency OHare, Chicago even better. I hope to see you there.

One of the topics of conversation at the forum was Part I of the results of our Best Practices Survey, which appeared in the September/October issue. Part II is featured in this issue, and its good stuff check it out.

I want to thank Morgan Stanley for collaborating with us to conduct the Best Practices Survey. Also, special thanks go to all you who took the time to complete the survey. With your input, we are able to develop benchmarks and identify trends in the parcel industry. Please keep an eye out for the early 2007 issues of PARCEL; we will again survey the industry and report on the results.

With our expanded informational capabilities the magazine, e-newsletters, web articles, etc. we have a lot of venues to present information. Were looking for material of benefit to our readers, from our readers. Please contribute your expertise. If there are areas of the parcel process that you feel you have expertise and/or experiences in, or areas you would like to us to cover, please email me (dan.o@rbpub.com) with your ideas and suggestions.

As always, thanks for reading PARCEL.
