I know our cover for this issue is a little different from what we normally choose — one could say it’s unconventional, even. But something about it stood out to me. It’s quirky, yet it conveys quite well the theme of this issue: we’re all in need of some help at some point. Hopefully, it’s never something as drastic as being rescued from a burning building or having the ropes that tie us to the tracks cut at the very last second as the train bears down with frightening speed, but in the parcel industry, there will come a time when you, our readers, will need help in lowering your parcel spend; selecting a negotiator to help you understand the seeming gibberish that is your contract; or picking out a new software solution. This Top Companies issue will help you find your hero.

So often, it seems as if there is so much information out there. Many times, this is a good thing, especially when it comes to things like finding the lowest plane fare or researching the best deal on a used car. But sometimes, so much information is simply overwhelming. You know you need an answer to a question, but it’s tempting to throw your hands up and shrug, “I have no idea where to begin, so why even start?” That’s one of the reasons we continue to do the Top Companies issue each year. Our readers love that there are multiple solutions listed in one, easy-to-access place, where they can refer to it as needed. You may not need to contact one of these companies today, but who’s to say you won’t in a month or two?
Speaking of pertinent information, be sure to mark your calendars for the PARCEL Forum, October 4-6, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago. We have a fantastic lineup of knowledgeable speakers, interactive peer-to-peer sessions and the chance to network with fellow industry professionals. If you’re going to be there, please stop by and say hello; I’d love to meet you!

As always, thanks for reading PARCEL.
