Saints QB Drew Brees & Titans RB Chris Johnson Named 2009 FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.--FedEx (NYSE: FDX) and the NFL today announced the winners of the seventh annual FEDEX AIR & GROUND NFL PLAYERS OF THE YEAR AWARDS at a press conference in South Florida, site of Super Bowl XLIV. • Quarterback DREW BREES of the New Orleans Saints was named the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Year. • Running back CHRIS JOHNSON of the Tennessee Titans was named the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year. In honor of the winners’ outstanding play, FedEx is donating $25,000 to the Safe Kids USA coalitions in New Orleans and Nashville, the local organizations in each player’s market. For the seventh season in a row, the Air & Ground program was a win for the local community. As part of this season’s Air & Ground program, FedEx teamed up with Safe Kids USA – a national non-profit organization that works to prevent accidental injury among children – to deliver safe kids. Throughout the season, FedEx made weekly $1,000 donations in the names of the Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week to their local Safe Kids coalitions to fund pedestrian safety improvements. To complement the weekly program, FedEx also hosted pedestrian safety clinics with NFL players at a series of elementary schools across the country, to educate students about safety and provide $10,000 in additional funding for each of the local Safe Kids coalitions for community improvements. • In Minneapolis, the coalition's executive board worked with the city's public works department to identify a school that was not only susceptible to speeding, but was receiving 500 additional students for the school year. The FedEx donation of more than $25,000 was used by the local Safe Kids coalition at Plymouth Middle School to install two radar speed signs, updated lighting and safety pylons in the road to slow down traffic near the school. • In San Francisco, the Safe Kids coalition will use its $10,000 in funding to improve pedestrian crosswalks, install flashing pedestrian lights and add “no parking” signs around Fair Oaks Elementary School, an area where a large percentage of students walk to school. Since 2000, FedEx has donated $12 million to support Safe Kids to help improve pedestrian safety efforts worldwide. OUTSTANDING AIR & GROUND PERFORMANCES New Orleans’ DREW BREES completed 70.62 percent of his passes in 2009, setting the NFL record for completion percentage in a season. He threw for 4,388 yards, extending his consecutive 4,000 passing yard seasons to four, a franchise record. Brees threw 34 touchdowns and became the first player in NFL history to throw six touchdown passes on Kickoff Weekend. With nine touchdown passes through Week 2, Brees tied for the most TD passes through the first two games of a season. Brees became the fastest quarterback to reach 15,000 passing yards with a team when the Saints beat the Giants in Week 6, reaching this milestone in 53 games. He quarterbacked the Saints to a 13-3 record and the number one seed in the NFC. Brees was nominated for five FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning five times. Tennessee’s CHRIS JOHNSON rushed for 2,006 yards in 2009 becoming the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards. He also broke the scrimmage yards record totaling 2,509. Johnson recorded 11 consecutive 100-yard games, tied for the second-longest streak in NFL history, and posted at least 125 rushing yards in six consecutive games, tying the NFL record. This season, Johnson became the first player in NFL history with six consecutive games of 125+ rushing yards and a 5.0+ yards per carry average in each of those games. In Week 2, Johnson became the first player in NFL history to record a 90-plus yard rushing touchdown (91), 50-plus yard rushing touchdown (57), and 60-plus yard receiving touchdown (69) in a game. Johnson started all 16 games and had 14 rushing touchdowns. He was nominated for six FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning twice. Brees and Johnson were selected from a panel of three finalists in each of their respective Air and Ground categories. The finalists were chosen by a panel of NFL experts based on the season’s fan voting. The other FedEx Air NFL Players of the Year finalists were quarterbacks PEYTON MANNING of the Indianapolis Colts and BRETT FAVRE of the Minnesota Vikings, while the FedEx Ground NFL Players of the Year finalists included running backs MAURICE JONES-DREW of the Jacksonville Jaguars and ADRIAN PETERSON of the Minnesota Vikings. More than 2,070,665 fan votes were cast at NFL.com from Monday, January 11 through Friday, January 29, to decide the winners. Former winners of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year Award include: • (2008) New Orleans Saints QB DREW BREES and Minnesota Vikings RB ADRIAN PETERSON • (2007) Green Bay Packers QB BRETT FAVRE and Jacksonville Jaguars RB FRED TAYLOR • (2006) New Orleans Saints QB DREW BREES and San Diego Chargers RB LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON • (2005) Bengals QB CARSON PALMER and Seattle Seahawks RB SHAUN ALEXANDER • (2004) Indianapolis Colts QB PEYTON MANNING and New York Jets RB CURTIS MARTIN • (2003) Indianapolis Colts QB PEYTON MANNING and Green Bay Packers RB AHMAN GREEN About FedEx As the Official Delivery Service Sponsor of the NFL, Super Bowl and Pro Bowl, FedEx understands the need for a winning game plan, and created the Air & Ground program to highlight superior on-field performance while delivering safe kids off the field.
Obama Says “No” to Privatization of USPS

During a recent “Good Idea, Bad Idea” question and answer session with President Obama the president was asked, “Mr. President, our deficit (national debt) is higher than ever at $12 trillion. Will you consider allowing the private sector to buy and take over the most troubled government-run agencies such as the U.S. Postal Service?" The president responded, "Bad idea most of the time. There are examples where privatization makes sense, where people can do things much more efficiently. But oftentimes what you see is companies want to buy those parts of a government-run op that are profitable, and they don't want to do anything else.” "So, for example, the U.S. Postal Service, everybody would love to have that high-end part of the business that FedEx and UPS are already in, business to business you make a lot of money. But do they want to deliver that postcard to a remote area somewhere in rural America that is a money loser? Well, the U.S. Post Office provides universal service. Those companies would not want to provide universal service.''

FedEx Teams up with the PGA TOUR, Audubon International and The First Tee to Launch a Sustainable Golf Program

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--As part of the FedEx commitment to environmental sustainability, the company is launching the FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign with the PGA TOUR, Audubon International and one of golf’s premiere youth charitable organizations, The First Tee. This campaign will teach local participants of The First Tee about sustainable golf practices while facilitating eco-friendly public golf course improvements in communities that host PGA TOUR FedExCup tournaments. “When it comes to making the game of golf more sustainable, every change is a positive change,” said PGA TOUR Pro Anthony Kim. “It is great to see so many organizations come together for a program that will inspire the golfers of today and tomorrow to make their game greener.” During the 2010 PGA TOUR season, The FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign is providing environmental improvement grants to six public golf courses used by The First Tee. FedEx is also working with Audubon International to create a “Green Golfer” curriculum that will teach young golfers nationwide about sustainable golf. Through Audubon International and The First Tee, FedEx and the PGA TOUR are identifying and facilitating improvements to those six public golf courses across the country. Course improvement events will take place in PGA TOUR tournament communities, starting with the first course improvement at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena, Calif., in conjunction with the Northern Trust Open being held at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles from February 4-7, 2010. All six course improvements will be completed by FedEx team members and young golfers from The First Tee with the goal of enhancing local community courses while making them more eco-friendly and minimizing their carbon footprint. Improvements will vary based on the needs of each course as determined by Audubon International, and activities will include restoring natural wildlife by planting indigenous trees, building bird houses and nests, naturalizing property and fence lines, and resodding and revitalizing ponds and waterways. In addition to on-site eco-friendly improvements, Audubon International also has developed a sustainability-relevant curriculum for The First Tee, which will be used by Chapters across the United States. “The First Tee’s mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf,” said The First Tee Executive Director Kelly Martin. “The FedExCup Fore!Ever program will help teach our young golfers about the importance of respecting and restoring the earth’s natural greenscape. It is such a valuable lesson.” In addition to providing grants for sustainability-focused course improvements and youth relevant curriculum, the FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign provides golfers of all ages with practical suggestions to make their game more eco-friendly, including: • Re-green your game: Practice good etiquette, like repairing ball marks and divots. This process helps heal the grass much faster and reduces the chance of insects, weeds or diseases affecting the grass in that area. Healthy grass requires fewer chemicals, less water and less work to maintain, which is for the good of the game and the environment. • Respect the wildlife: Golf is a shared experience with nature. You need to respect wildlife habitat on the course and recognize the link between golf and nature. So before stepping onto the green, examine course maps to identify areas that may be home to wildlife and should be left undisturbed during the game. • Lead by example: Sustainability starts at home. Trade in plastic water bottles for reusable and refillable bottles that can be used and washed time and time again. Drinking something other than water? Make it a point to recycle empty cans and bottles at the end of your round. “At FedEx, we strive to connect the world more efficiently,” said Rose Flenorl, Manager of Global Citizenship at FedEx. “The program with The First Tee and Audubon International leverages our FedEx team members and philanthropic dollars to address sustainability issues within one of our major sports sponsorships.” FedEx Environmental Sustainability The FedExCup® Fore!Ever initiative extends the FedEx commitment to connect the world responsibly and resourcefully by encouraging environmentally sustainable practices into the game of golf. FedEx is taking steps both locally and globally to reduce the environmental impact of its daily business operations. The company is working to improve vehicle fuel efficiency by 20 percent by the year 2020 by optimizing delivery routes, increasing its hybrid and alternative fuel fleets and increasing its solar capacity, among other efforts. FedEx has been recognized for its sustainability commitment through inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index – a global list of the world’s largest, most sustainability organizations – and ranking #93 in Newsweek’s Top 500 Greenest Companies (published September 2009) About FedEx Corp.
International Mail Shipping

In today's world the distinction between the United States Post Office and US Small package carriers is not as clearly defined as it once was. The US Post Office is now offering broader international services including discounts for larger shippers. All three small parcel carriers offer international mail services: UPS as UPS Mail Innovations, FedEx International Mail, and DHL Globalmail-Business. The advantage of the small package carrier mail services of the ease of processing and lower cost than standard small package rates. If you are already shipping with a small package carrier you may want to check the rates and service levels to the destinations you ship most often. Perhaps a mail solution can meet your delivery commitments and reduce your costs. If you decide the savings are there, you can just identify a portion of the shipments you are making as international mail and turn the shipment over to the small package carrier picking up your standard small package shipments. The carrier will sort them, stamp them and turn the shipment over to the mail service for final delivery. All three carriers offer a standard service and a premium service. The premium service includes tracking until the package is turned over to the local delivering carrier. The following are some excerpts from the USPS and the small package carriers about their mail services: USPS International Shipping Instructions International Service Average Delivery Time Starting Price Global Express Guaranteed 1-3 days From $31.95 Express Mail International 3 - 5 days From $25.95 Priority Mail International 6-10 days From $10.95 First-Class Mail Intl. 6 days to 2 weeks From $0.75 USPS - Priority Mail International ... Today all four companies above are accepting packages up to 50 pounds and more in some cases. All of the carriers have a lot of information about the services they are offering. Here are a few key things you should consider, whichever company you choose to utilize for international mail services. 1. Mail shipments are not exempt from compliance with export and import laws though they sometimes slip through without the collection of duties and taxes. 2. Mail shipments from the US to a foreign country are exports and must comply with US Department of Commerce 15 CFR and 22 CFR US Department of State rules. Look for details at: http://www.bis.doc.gov/licensing/exportingbasics.htm . Failure to comply with export laws could result in heavy fines. In general high technology, nuclear and military related technology and products are those excluded from export. We cannot export to Cuba, North Korea, and Iran. There are also lists of persons and companies to whom exports are restricted. 3. Every shipment other than "documents only " should have an invoice-either a Pro Forma invoice or a commercial invoice identifying the shipper, the consignee or receiver, the items shipped, the value, the country of origin and the classification. 4. The value should be the cost to purchase or the cost to produce the item shipped plus the normal profit per International Transaction Value law. (Numerous websites are available for this information but the addresses are really long!) 5. The country of origin of the item shipped should be stated in the export documentation. The country of origin is often marked on the item and refers to where the item was produced and not just where it was shipped from. 6. The description should be more than just the product trade name. The information necessary to arrive at a classification is a good guideline to use. 7. The harmonized classification of the item should be provided. If the value of an item shipped is $2500 or more the export classification must be reported in the Automated Export System. The US Dept of Commerce provides a database for ease of classification. http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/schedules/b/#search 8. There are also several mail consolidation services available such as Brokers Worldwide www.brokersworldwide.com . This is the first in a series of articles on the growing interest in the use of mail shipments rather than standard small package shipments. Our next article will discuss examples of the cost differential and service levels of small package and mail consolidation or direct mail options. Good luck with your shipments! Thomas M.
Postal Service Updates Consolidation Initiative

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service today filed an update with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) indicating that 162 offices remain under review for possible consolidation under the station and branch consolidation initiative. That is six fewer from the last update in December. No final decisions have been made regarding specific office consolidations. Today’s filing with the PRC updates a review process begun last summer that initially examined about 3,300 stations and branches in urban and suburban areas, focusing on facilities in relatively close proximity to one another where consolidations might be feasible without compromising customer access. “Consumer behavior is changing. It is important for the Postal Service to adjust to the shift,” says Dean Granholm, vice president of Delivery and Post Office Operations. “We will continue to provide easy access, but changes to our retail network are essential to our ability to continue to provide the safe secure and fairly priced postal services that Americans have counted on for 234 years.” With more than 36,000 Post Offices, stations, branches, contract and community post offices, the Postal Service has the largest retail network in the United States. Always on the lookout for convenience, though, many Postal Service customers are choosing to access postal services and purchase stamps via alternative access – locations other than a Post Office. More than 56,000 locations such as supermarkets, drug stores, and other retailers sell postage and selected postal services. Nearly 18,000 ATMs dispense sheets of stamps. It is the online alternative at usps.com, where you can get shipping information, purchase and print postage 24/7, that customers find most convenient. In 2009, nearly 30 percent of postal retail transactions were conducted in locations other than a Post Office. The Postal Service receives no tax subsidy to operate the nation’s mail service. Revenues from the sale of postage, products and services fund its operations. Last year, the Postal Service reported a loss of $3.8 billion. A number of new initiatives have also been undertaken to build revenue, including Flat Rate Priority Mail pricing and the introduction of greeting cards for sale at about 900 select Post Offices. As part of the consolidation process, the Postal Service has filed periodic updates with the Postal Regulatory Commission identifying the retail stations and branches that remain under consideration. Today’s filing does not represent a final decision on consolidation. No facility-specific final decisions have been made as a result of this initiative.

928 go 25 years without accident to earn a spot; circle's collective record passes 5 billion miles. UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced the induction of 928 drivers into its elite "Circle of Honor," raising to 4,793 the number of active drivers who have steered clear of accidents for 25 years or more. The number of new inductees is the largest for any single year in the company's history. Collectively, the 4,793 drivers have logged more than 5 billion miles and more than 136,091 years of safe driving through their careers. That's enough miles to circle the earth 212,000 times. Of the Circle of Honor members, 231 have been accident-free for 35 or more years, with 17 of those having driven more than 40 years without an accident. UPS's top safe driver in 2009 is Kentucky District tractor-trailer driver Ron "Big Dog" Sowder, who has achieved 48 years and 4 million miles of driving without an accident. "It's an honor to lead this remarkable group of seasoned safe drivers," said Sowder. "I'm not ready to stop just yet - 50 years without an accident has a nice ring to it." "Safe driving is not an afterthought - it's at the very heart of our culture," said Debbie Gehricke, UPS's corporate health and safety manager. "Our drivers make a choice to be the best. The Circle of Honor is a testament to the daily dedication that our drivers display in keeping the roads a safe place for everyone." This year, 11 female drivers have joined the ranks of those with more than 30 years of safe driving. This group is led by Orlando tractor-trailer driver Ginny Odom, who is credited with 35 years and more than 3 million miles without an accident. UPS's 102,000 drivers worldwide are among the safest on the roads, logging more than 3.3 billion miles per year with less than one accident per million miles driven. "We salute Ron Sowder and the other UPS Circle of Honor drivers," American Society of Safety Engineers President C. Christopher Patton, CSP, said today. "What Sowder has done, driving 48 years without an accident, is an amazing feat and one that should be recognized worldwide. ASSE members continue to work every day at preventing workplace injuries, especially those that occur on the roads, as roadway incidents are the number one cause of on-the-job deaths. Because of people like Sowder and the UPS Circle of Honor drivers, our roads are safer - not only in the U.S. but worldwide." All UPS drivers are taught safe driving methods beginning on the first day of classroom training, including the company's comprehensive safety course, "Space and Visibility." The training continues throughout their careers.

DHL to Donate Former Principal U.S. Air Hub to Community in Southwest Ohio

PLANTATION, Fla. and Bonn – January 19, 2009/ Deutsche Post DHL, the world's leading logistics provider, and the Clinton County Port Authority (CCPA), today announced their preliminary agreement on the essential business terms for the donation of DHL’s former principal U.S. express hub to the local community of Wilmington, Ohio U.S.A., for redevelopment and future use of the site as an airport/commerce park. DHL and local officials continue to work diligently on completing the donation documentation and are hopeful to close the transaction before the end of the first quarter of 2010. “With the donation, we will close a challenging chapter in our company’s history,” said Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL. “Ending operations in Wilmington was a difficult decision to make, but in the end, it helped us create a financially and operationally sound basis for our entire U.S. express business, and thus safeguard employment for thousands throughout the country. Moreover, through this move we were able to maintain stability of our global network and could continue to deliver time-critical international services to and from the U.S.,” Appel continued. In 2008, DHL restructured its U.S. express business to stem losses, leading the Company to focus entirely on its industry leading international offerings and eliminating the need to maintain the US$310 million Air Park in Wilmington, Ohio, as its principal U.S. air hub. In late August of 2009, DHL transitioned to its principal hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG), a facility right sized for DHL’s restructured U.S. operations. 1,600 staffers are employed at DHL’s hub at CVG, including hundreds that transferred from the Air Park in Wilmington, Ohio. Today’s announcement builds upon an earlier commitment by DHL’s parent company DP DHL to donate its Air Park as a gift to support the local community. ”We are very pleased to be able to support the region and people of Wilmington, and we are hopeful that the donation will serve as a platform for redevelopment and future commerce in Southwestern Ohio” said Ian Clough, CEO of DHL Express, U.S. “As a partner and major employer in the region for nearly 30 years, we are committed to the communities in Ohio that have felt the impact of our decision to relocate.” DHL has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in retention and severance benefits as part of its ongoing commitment to the people and community in and around Wilmington, Ohio – above and beyond what is required for its employees. DHL has also donated US$1-million to the Clinton County Fund for the Community of Wilmington, contributed an additional US$50,000 to the Foster J. Boyd, MD, Regional Cancer Center, and funded a Job and Career Transition Center for the employees of the Air Park. As the ultimate landlord of the Wilmington Airpark, the CCPA will work with the City of Wilmington, Clinton County, the State of Ohio and local municipalities to redevelop the former DHL hub as an airport/commerce park. Currently, the CCPA plans to lease a portion of the Air Park to Air Transport Service Group (ATSG), the parent of ABX Air which operated as an air services provider for DHL Express. "On behalf of the directors of the CCPA I would like to acknowledge the generosity of DHL,” said John Limbert, Chairman of the CCPA. “As a result of this philanthropic transaction the communities that comprise Southwest Ohio will be in a better position to manage their own economic growth. Although it will take time to recruit numerous aviation-related industries to this area, we see great potential for this facility to be a hub for new technologies while simultaneously supporting existing aviation business lines,” concluded Limbert. All terms of the donation agreement are expected to be finalized for closing of all property transactions in early 2010. DP DHL remains a major employer in the U.S., with a total workforce of 30,000 representing EXPRESS, MAIL, GLOBAL FORWARDING, AND SUPPLY CHAIN. In Ohio alone, DP DHL employs nearly 3,800 staffers representing these Corporate divisions. On November 5, DP DHL announced its third quarter 2009 earnings, reporting that the success of cost-cutting measures helped the Express Division realize an increase in profitability over the same period in the previous year.
